Chapter Twenty-two

Memories that I’d hoped never again to revisit overwhelmed me, and it all started with seeing Ronald again. I had told myself it would be okay, and I’d wanted to believe I was over him. But I’d lied to my damn self. Big mistake, because it seemed as if I’d awaken a sleeping giant, an addiction so powerful, it almost killed me.

I paced my apartment, trying to out walk the emotions that threatened to suck me into a dark vortex. After several hours of walking back and forth, I realized I was not going to be able to talk myself down from this without help.

I picked up the phone, but before I could finish dialing, the doorbell rang. Company never dropped by unannounced, so I was afraid to go to the door. I’d seen on the news that thieves were getting so bold, they were coming to homes in broad daylight and kicking in doors.

I was standing frozen next to the phone, unsure about what to do, when the bell rang again, followed by an impatient-sounding knock. Whoever was at the door wasn’t going away, so I had no choice but to answer it.

“Who is it?” I shouted into the door opening. If they were going to kick it in, they would have done it by now.

“Girl, it’s LaDena. Open the damn door. It’s hotter than a witch’s tit out here.”

I couldn’t understand why LaDena was outside my door. She never came by, and she’d picked the absolute worst time to start trying new shit.

“Did you get lost?” I blocked the doorway just in case she had it in her head she was coming inside.

“Lost? Why you blocking the door like a damn linebacker?” She pushed me aside and came in the house.

“Hello? Why are you at my house instead of your own?” My curiosity stopped me from getting upset with her.

“I’m here because I’m sick of watching you mope around the office like you’ve lost your last friend. And since you act like you don’t want to talk in the office no damn mo’, I decided to come by to see if there was anything I could do.” She walked in my kitchen like she owned the damn place and poured herself something to drink. “Is this all the alcohol you got?” She held up the half-empty bottle like there was piss in the bottle instead of aged scotch.

I rolled my eyes. “You don’t have to drink it.”

She hadn’t been here two minutes, and she’d already plucked my nerves.

“Humph. You don’t have to tell me. I always carry my own.” She pulled out a silver flask from her purse and poured a generous portion of the contents into a glass with some ice.

“Why don’t you just make yourself at home?”

“I already did. Are you going to let me drink alone?”

I had never noticed this bossy side of LaDena, and I didn’t know if I liked it or not. But she did take the focus off of me and the other, more dangerous things going on in my head.
